In August 7th, I was given the privilege of being a guest speaker at a dinner for the Abiomed company. This company manufactures the heart pump that played a pivotal role in saving my life when I had my heart event.
The mechanism worked for me while my heart couldn’t function on its own. I was overwhelmed listening to the doctors going over case study and how the average patient got to live an additional 180 days.
My Cardiologist and friend, Dr. Nassir Azimi spoke briefly on the finer points of my case. He then introduced my family and me for everyone in attendance.
I was then left alone on the stage to tell my story. This wasn’t my first time, but this time, I was speaking to professionals in the field.
As I spoke, I saw doctors and corporate employees change before my eyes. You see, these incredibly talented and devoted people very rarely hear from patients once they are released from the hospital.
They move on to the next patient with the same passion to save their life and make a meaningful difference. My role was to fill the void that they have very little time to think about in their busy days.
I was reassured that reliving the events that changed my life gave them the “why” that they often go without and need just like anyone else.
It was a beautiful exchange between professionals and the patient. I feel empowered to continue sharing, testifying, and helping. I know now that my contributions matter.
