Why I Believe God Made Black Hair.

Why I Believe God Made Black Hair.

An essay by Monique A. Marrissette Hall

Whew! Masterful Jesus! I just took my braids down. Any trip to the dentist would be better.

But wait, in my pain came clarity and a sense of understanding.

Black hair is a symbol. It is the same as a human being.

Black hair should be understood. It may be different, but is that a reason to not ask how to care for it? What are its needs? What are its desires? What are its goals? How does it wish to be thought of by the world that is so quick to judge?

Black hair requires patience. Once it is heard and understood, another person has to take the valuable commodity of time to work with it. Any process is time consuming and labor intensive. If enough time and effort is invested, the end product will stop traffic.

Black hair is the same as other hair. In its uniqueness, it comes out of a hair follicle, just like straight or wavy hair. It expresses itself in many ways, but it always has something important to say.
